Fort Collins ,CO : 26-year-old man killed in Motorcycle Crash after speed limit after he missed a right curve on Sunday , April 5th 2015
A 26-year-old man was killed Easter Sunday in a motorcycle crash in Poudre Canyon, about 15 miles west of Fort Collins.
Colorado State Patrol received a call about the crash at 12:17 p.m. Sunday, said Sgt. Rob Madden, CSP spokesperson.
Madden said the man, identified Sunday by the Larimer County coroner and medical examiner’s office as David F. Martinez Carreon, was heading eastbound on Hwy 14 on a Yamaha sport bike when he entered a 35 mph zone. The driver was likely traveling faster than the posted speed limit when he missed a right curve, Madden said.
“It looks like speed was a contributing factor,” Madden said.
The motorcycle’s spokes caught in a tree on the opposite shoulder, Madden said, and both Martinez Carreon and the motorcycle were thrown down a steep embankment into the Poudre River. Madden said Martinez Carreon was swept about 100 feet down the river.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, Madden said. James Macnaughton of the Larimer coroner’s office said the cause and manner of Martinez Carreon’s death would be available Monday, after the completion of an autopsy.
A motorcycle helmet was found at the scene, but Madden said it appeared Martinez Carreon was not wearing it at the time of the crash.
Madden said neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to have contributed to the crash, but that information is still pending a standard toxicology report from the coroner’s office.
“With the weather getting nicer, people out on the roads need to drive carefully and be aware of their surroundings,” Madden said. “Anyone driving a motorcycle should also wear a helmet and be sure they have the proper training to do so.”
Madden said the motorcycle crash was one of several over the weekend in Colorado.
