Grand Haven, MI : Zeeland man escapes serious injury in wrong-way crash on I-196 near 48th Avenue Tuesday night, August 16, 2016
A Zeeland man escaped serious injury when his SUV was struck by a wrong-way driver late Tuesday night on eastbound I-196 near 48th Avenue.
Benjamin Tubergan, 29, sought his own treatment for minor injuries after the 11:49 p.m. crash.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies were responding to the area over numerous 911 calls of a wrong-way driver when the crash was reported, said Sgt. Jay Douglas.
A 45-year-old Caledonia man was driving a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe the wrong way on eastbound I-196 when he crashed into Tubergan’s 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer, Douglas said. Both vehicles ended up in the highway’s median.
The wrong-way driver’s name was withheld pending possible charges. He was taken into custody at the scene and then lodged at the Ottawa County Jail, Douglas said.
Alcohol was a factor in the crash, the sergeant said.
After the crash, the eastbound lanes of the highway were closed for about an hour for the investigation.
