Philadelphia ,PA :Speed cited in crash that killed off-duty Philadelphia police sergeant whose pickup hit tree on Saturday night ,August 22nd 2015
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Authorities say a speed was a factor in the crash that killed an off-duty Philadelphia police sergeant whose pickup truck struck a large tree.
Police said 32-year-old Sgt. Rafael Ali of the 39th police district was in the Roxborough neighborhood when his truck went onto the center median and hit the tree at about 11:43 p.m. Saturday. He was extricated from the wreckage but died at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday at Einstein Medical Center.
Capt. John Wilczynski said Ali had been a police officer for a decade. He said there is no indication that alcohol was a factor, but the truck was going "well over" the 35 mph speed limit. He said Ali never hit the brakes, and investigators speculate that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
