HENDERSON, KY : Crash-prone intersection near Spottsville school getting adjustment on Tuesday, 25th February, 2020
An intersection that has been a magnet for vehicle accidents is getting a face lift.
Nick Stallings, an engineer with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, spoke to the Henderson County Fiscal Court on Tuesday recommending that state funds be used to realign the intersection of U.S. 60 and Kentucky 1078.
This intersection is located near Spottsville Elementary School.
"We think we have a good plan," Stallings said. "We have a lot of wrecks out there, and this realignment will give motorists more of a sight distance toward the west" which appears to be at the heart of the issue.
Stopping sight distance is one of several types of sight distance used in road design. It is a near worst-case distance a vehicle driver needs to be able to see in order to have room to stop before colliding with something in the roadway, such as a pedestrian in a crosswalk, a stopped vehicle or road debris, according to information gathered from a website.
The elementary school is "literally right there" at the intersection, Stallings said.
"Looking west, you only have a couple of seconds of sight distance. We like to have 600 feet of sight distance, and currently there is barely 150," he said.
