Waco, TX : 1 dead, 3 injured in Highway 6 wreck early Thursday, November 3, 2016

A wrong-way driver caused a deadly crash shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday on State Highway 6 northbound past the Twin Bridges, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

A woman driving south in the northbound lane collided head-on with a man and a woman in another passenger vehicle, Swanton said.

An 18-wheeler carrying non-hazardous glycerine either tried to avoid the crash or came through it and flipped several times, Swanton said. The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center and was pronounced dead, Swanton said. The driver’s name is not being released pending notification of his family.

The other three involved also were taken to the hospital and suffered multiple injuries, including broken bones, but they will survive, Swanton said.

Swanton said a Waco firefighter reported the truck cab looked like “a piece of tin foil wadded into a ball,” and rescue equipment was used to remove the driver.
Northbound traffic on the highway was initially shut down, and traffic was being diverted to the access road near Twin Bridges Park, Swanton said.

State Highway 6 reopened at about 1 p.m. after the crash.
Waco Police Department Accident Reconstruction Detectives plan to close both northbound lanes of Highway 6 on the Speegleville side of the Twin Bridges between 9 a.m. and noon Friday to continue their investigation, Swanton said.

Traffic will be diverted to the access road at the Twin Bridges Park exit, which is expected to cause significant delays, Swanton said. Officials are urging people to avoid the area in the morning.

As emergency crews were working, motorists driving by were taking photos and videos on their cellphones, some using both hands to capture the scene, which puts first responders, other drivers and themselves in harm’s way, Swanton said.

“It was one of the worst examples of irresponsible driving I’ve ever seen in my 36 years of work here,” Swanton said.
Waco police are investigating the crash.
