Tulsa, OK : McLain Junior High School students injured when school bus, SUV crash near 42nd Street North and North Lewis on Monday morning, March 30, 2015
Several McLain Junior High School students sustained minor injuries Monday morning when their school bus collided with a sport utility vehicle on a north Tulsa street.
The bus carrying 36 McLain students was headed north in the 4200 block of North Lewis Avenue about 8:20 a.m. when it collided head-on with a southbound SUV that also hit a car, Tulsa Public Schools spokesman Chris Payne said.
The driver of the bus, who Payne said was not at fault, was treated at a Tulsa hospital. The drivers of the SUV and the car were also taken to hospitals.
EMSA spokeswoman Kelli Bruer said one person was transported in serious condition, with two others being hospitalized in fair condition. Eleven others were evaluated and treated by paramedics at the scene but were not transported to a hospital, Bruer said.
The stretch of road near the accident site was filled with ambulances, fire trucks, police vehicles and concerned parents looking for children who were aboard the bus.
“We just tried to act quickly and inform parents of what happened,” said Payne, who confirmed that TPS alerted parents almost immediately after the wreck. “We just wanted to make sure the kids were taken care of."
The bus driver did a good job but could not avoid the collision, Payne said.
While no official cause of the accident has been determined, Payne said the SUV driver, whose condition is unknown, might have been speeding.
Citations were not issued at the scene, police said.
