Gainesville, FL : Jamell D. Dell, 24, died in crash on Waldo Road Thursday morning, April 7, 2016

A Starke man was killed on Waldo Road Thursday morning when he tried to make a U-turn in his Ford Mustang, lost control of the car and ended up in the path of an oncoming semi, officials say.

Jamell D. Dell, 24, died in the crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. He had been driving north on Waldo Road that morning and failed to yield as he attempted to make a U-turn.

He lost control of the car as he sped into the turn and the Mustang spun, heading into the path of a man from Georgia who was driving a semi, according to FHP. The front of the Mustang collided with the driver’s side of the truck, forcing both vehicles into the center median.

Emergency responders rushed to the accident, which happened near 10600 Waldo Road, and was reported to the authorities around 7:30 a.m., Alachua County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Art Forgey said. The southbound side of Waldo Road had to be shut down for a while, so drivers were rerouted to the northbound side of the street, which slowed down traffic.

FHP spokesman Capt. William Tierney said Dell died at the scene.

“He was killed on impact,” Tierney said. FHP is still investigating.
