Phoenix, AZ : Paul Troupe, 22, dead; 1 critically injured after semi-truck driven by alleged DUI driver Brian J. Knoll, 54, rear-ends four vehicles in I-17 in Phoenix on Wednesday morning, November 19, 2014
One man is dead and another critically injured after a semi-truck carrying a load of pavers veered across three lanes of traffic on Interstate 17 and rear-ended four vehicles, causing one of them to burst into flames Wednesday morning.
An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer pulled the driver out of the burning car and immediately began giving the man chest compressions, but the victim later died at a Phoenix hospital, DPS spokesman Tim Case said.
The man was later identified as Paul Troupe, 22, of Phoenix. He was in the first of the four cars that was rear-ended.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety confirmed the death in a tweet about 10:45 a.m. after another DPS spokesman had disputed earlier reports the crash involved a fatality.
The driver of the semi-truck has been identified as Brian J. Knoll, 54, of Phoenix. He was arrested for a DUI investigation and was booked into jail on one count of second-degree murder. Additional charges are pending.
The crash happened about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Case said, and blocked northbound I-17. Shortly before 2 p.m., the on-site investigation ended and I-17 reopened in both directions at Bell Road, ADOT said.
The semi crashed into the median barrier and spilled its contents onto the southbound lanes, closing those lanes until just after 8 a.m., Case said.
The driver of the semi was given a field sobriety test, handcuffed and taken to a DPS facility for further investigation, Case said.
The driver of an overturned pickup truck remained hospitalized in critical condition, Case said.
Northbound traffic was forced to exit before Bell Road and traffic in the southbound lanes was exiting at Greenway, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The far right southbound lane was reopened just after 8 a.m. and the traffic backup in the southbound lanes was gone by noon, an ADOT official said.
No other information was available.
