Chicago, IL : Carpentersville residents killed in McHenry Township crash identified on April, Sunday 9th 2017
Offficials have released the name of two Carpentersville residents who were killed Sunday after the motorcycle they were on collided with a minivan in unincorporated McHenry Township.
The crash, which occurred after 7:50 p.m. at the intersection of River and Charles J. Miller roads, killed Dennis Edward Spears Jr., 49, and Tanya Schafer, 42, according to information released Tuesday by the Lake County Coroner's Office and the McHenry County Coroner's Office.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the motorcycle, driven by Spears, was heading south on River Road and had a green light at the intersection with Charles J. Miller Road, according to officials. A 2014 Chrysler Town & Country minivan driven by a 41-year-old Wonder Lake woman was heading north on River Road and turning west on Charles J. Miller Road. The van's driver failed to yield to the motorcycle, leading to the crash, according to the news release from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.Spears was taken by ambulance to Centegra Hospital in McHenry, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy performed Monday afternoon revealed he died from blunt force injuries to the head and pelvis, according to the release from the McHenry County Coroner's Office.
Schafer was taken by ambulance to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville, where she was pronounced dead. According to Lake County Coroner officials, preliminary results of Schafer's autopsy reveal she died from multiple injuries consistent with the crash.
According to the release, motorists were detoured for several hours after the accident while police investigated, and units from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, McHenry Police Department and the McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded to the scene.The release noted there was nothing to indicate that the two people on the motorcycle were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. The driver of the van was wearing a seat belt and airbags were deployed.
The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff's Department Accident Investigation Unit and the Coroner's Office.
Police have not released the name of the van's driver or indicated if any traffic citations were issued.
