Las Cruces, N.M : Man driving motorcycle dies in East Mesa crash on Friday afternoon, February 3, 2017

The Las Cruces Police Department is investigating a Friday afternoon crash that claimed the life of a motorcyclist on the city’s East Mesa.

Police responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and truck on Mesa Grande Drive shortly after 1 p.m. Friday.

A news release stated preliminary information from the investigation suggests a Yamaha motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed north on Mesa Grande when it struck the side of a Freightliner panel truck turning south onto Mesa Grande from Calle Pastura.

According to the release, the 19-year-old man driving the motorcycle was transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Police said the man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the panel truck was not injured, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and no citations have been issued.

In the news release sent shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday, police reported traffic along Mesa Grande is temporarily blocked between Calle Verde and Engler Road. Police are asking motorists in that area to seek an alternative route.
