Great Bend, KS : Two people injured in a head-on collision in Barton County on Wednesday evening, February 24, 2016

A head-on collision in Barton County sent two to the hospital Wednesday evening.

Just before 6 p.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were sent to the 300 block of northeast 10 Avenue, just north of 30 Road, where they found a two-vehicle injury accident in which two people were hurt, according to a Barton County Sheriff’s Office release.

Investigation at the scene indicated that Akia Blackburn, 17, of Ellinwood was heading south in a Chevy Impala on the gravel road when she lost control of her vehicle near the Wet Walnut Creek bridge, crossed left of center and struck a northbound 2012 Lincoln driven by Gina Westhoff, 39, of Great Bend.

Both drivers were sent to Great Bend Regional Hospital for injuries. Blackburn was later taken to Wesley Medical Center. As of Thursday afternoon, officials with Wesley said she was in fair condition.

The Great Bend Fire Department, EMS personnel and the Kansas Highway Patrol assisted on scene.

The crash still is under investigation, as speed appears to be a contributing factor, according to the release.
