Shawnee, OK : 1 killed, 1 injured in crash near Asher on Friday, 14th October 2016
An Asher man was killed and a Tecumseh man was injured when the vehicle they were in struck a bridge and then overturned in a creek in the area of SH 59 at U.S. 177 in south Pottawatomie County.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said that crash occurred sometime between 11:30 p.m. Thursday night and about 12:01 a.m. Friday on westbound SH 59 at U.S. 177, which is three miles west of Saint Louis.
A 2003 Chevrolet pickup driven by Wiley D. Hargus, 34, Asher, was westbound on SH 59 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and continued westbound, the OHP said.
The pickup departed the roadway to the right and struck a sign, a guardrail and then a bridge abutment, the patrol reported, which caused the vehicle to overturn one-half time before it came to rest on its top in a creek.
Hargus was found deceased in the vehicle with head, internal trunk and external injuries, the OHP reported. He was taken by Cooper Funeral Home to the medical examiner's office in Oklahoma City.
A passenger, James T. Lewis, 24, Tecumseh, was transported by REACT EMS ambulance to Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City, where he was treated for internal and external trunk injuries, then released, the patrol noted.
Cause of the collision and the driver's condition at the time of the accident are under investigation by state troopers.
The patrol said seat belts were not in use.
The crash was investigated by Trooper Tyson Wright of the Lincoln/Pottawatomie County detachment of Troop A. He was assisted at the scene by Trooper Troy Thompson and Trooper Will Arnett, both of the same detachment, and by Trooper Spears of the metro detachment of Troop A, Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Deputies, the Asher Fire Department, REACT EMS and the medical examiner's office.
