Varnado,LA : Angie woman killed in fatal head-on crash on August, Friday 18th 2017

A two-car crash claimed the life of 71-year-old Hazel Marie Caruso, when police say she drove head-on into the car of 66-year-old Josie Leslie Hartzog, on La. 436-1 near Varnado Friday night

According to a report released by Louisiana State Police, Caruso was not wearing her seatbelt when her 2006 Toyota Camry drifted into the northbound lane, directly into the path of Hartzog's 2014 Nissan Juke.

Caruso was airlifted from the scene in critical condition, police said, and succumbed to her injuries during the flight. Hartzog and her two passengers were all wearing their seatbelts, according to police, and sustained no major injuries. They were brought to St. Tammany Parish Hospital in an ambulance.

The investigation is still in progress and blood samples of both drivers have been sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime lab.

Both Caruso and Hartzog are residents of Angie.

"Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel," State Trooper Dustin Dwight said in the press release, "Distractions, impairment, carelessness, and lack of restraint continue to be factors in preventable crashes."

Dwight said he urges people to take a moment to speak with their loved-ones about safe driving decisions. "The conversation you have today could be the difference tomorrow," he said.
