Provo, UT : Pair of crashes leaves one dead in Orem, closed I-15 in Provo on Monday, February 27th 2017
Utah Highway Patrol troopers were busy Monday morning as Interstate 15 was closed in Provo and one person died in Orem.
I-15 northbound was closed at mile marker 263 from about 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., close to the Provo Center Street exit, due to a 17-car accident. Sgt. Todd Royce with UHP said the massive pileup was greatly influenced by the snowy, slushy roads.
“These later winter, early spring snowstorms come in, and they come in kind of fast,” Royce said. “We had a heavy snowfall in the Orem/Provo area really quick. It caught people kind of off guard.”
A fatal accident on northbound I-15 near the Orem Center Street exit also slowed traffic.
Royce said a 37-year-old woman was killed when her car spontaneously stalled. Royce said crash investigators are looking into why the car stalled. As her car slowed, a semitrailer rear-ended her and she lost control.
She died at an area hospital.
Royce advised motorists to take extra caution on the roads, even if they only look wet.
“If they’re expecting snowstorms or these quick-moving cold storms, always expect the unexpected,” Royce said. “Now what we have to deal with as temperatures get lower, then we have to worry about black ice. It’s not done yet.”
Other crashes dotted I-15 and city roads as the storm pushed across the county throughout the morning.
