Seven Dead in Four Separate Crashes in Ashburn Virginia
Seven people were killed in four separate accidents in Virginia early Sunday morning.The first accident occurred around 1 a.m., involving a car and a motorcycle. Police said Mark Sgarlata turning left into a shopping center off Ashburn Farm Parkway in Ashburn, Va., when his BMW sedan struck a motorcycle with two people aboard.
The driver of the motorcycle and his passenger were thrown from the motorcycle and died at a local hospital. They have been identified as Patrick Wrenn Jr., 46, and Leia Wrenn, 44, of Ashburn.Sgarlata, 52, was charged with driving while impaired and two counts of felony aggravated involuntary manslaughter.
About 40 minutes after that crash, a single-vehicle accident killed two people at the intersection of Evergreen Mills Road and Reservoir Road in Leesburg, Va.In that case, a 1994 Ford Explorer was traveling north on Evergreen Mills Road when the driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The Explorer crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the road and hit into a tree.
The Explorer caught fire, and both occupants were killed. Authorities say speed was a factor in the crash.
A third accident occurred around 3 a.m. when a 1995 Lexus slammed into a train bridge support along South Van Dorn Street in Alexandria, Va.Two people in the car were killed. The driver, Devin Austin, 21, of Triangle, Va., and the front passenger, Aminata Sesay, 23, of Alexandria, Va., died at the scene.
A 20-year-old rear passenger was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.Police are still investigating how the accident occurred. A preliminary investigation indicates speed may have been a factor.
A fourth accident happened just after 4 a.m. in Manassas in an SUV with nine people inside.Authorities say Alejandra Valeri Espinoza-Velasquez, 19, lost control of her Ford Explorer while driving in the area of Dumfries Road and Toddsbury Lane. The Explorer left the road and rolled over multiple times before landing on its roof.
Four of Espinoza-Velasquez's passengers were ejected. Investigators say five occupants were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, including a 4-year-old boy.
Doris Aucapina-Espinoza, 43, of Rockwood, N.Y., died at the scene. The 4-year-old suffered significant injuries
