Greenport, NY :Motorcycle crash leaves man in critical condition on Thursday, July 9th 2015.
One person was hospitalized with critical injuries Thursday following a motorcycle accident on Route 66, according to New York State Police.The accident occurred around 6 p.m., when a man lost control of the motorcycle he was operating just after crossing the bridge over Claverack Creek and hit the Town of Claverack sign, state police said.The motorcycle came to rest at the base of a utility pole on the northbound side of the road near the Dutch Village Mobile Home Park at 440 Route 66, state police said.The man was taken by Greenport Rescue Squad to Columbia Memorial Hospital with unspecified injuries, state police said.“He’s touch-and-go right now,” said New York State Police Sgt. Al Miano Thursday night.The man’s injuries were critical, and he would likely be transported by ambulance to Albany Medical Center if he could be stabilized. Helicopter transport was not likely due to the rainy weather conditions. Miano said.Troopers were still working to determine where the man, who Miano said was in his 20s, was headed when the accident occurred and where he was coming from. The man was wearing a helmet and other safety gear when the accident occurred, Miano said.The investigation into the cause of the accident was ongoing, but the weather may have played a part in the accident, he said. Heavy rain had been falling at the time the accident occurred.Route 66 was blocked off at the intersection of Healy Boulevard by the Greenport Fire Department. New York State Police and the West Ghent Fire Company worked at the scene to collect evidence, and troopers photographed skid marks just over the northbound end of the bridge, where the recent rainfall had caused several puddles to form.A handful of witnesses were interviewed at the scene who either saw the accident occur or saw the immediate aftermath, Miano said. Another person at the scene driving a motorcycle was interviewed, but Miano said he did not know if the two men had been riding together when the accident occurred.
