SALEM, OR : Man struck, killed by two cars while crossing Highway 22 near Salem on Thursday, 3rd November 2016
A man was killed when he was struck by two different cars on Highway 22 just west of West Salem.
Oregon State Police and emergency crews responded to Highway 22 and Frontage Road just before 8 p.m. Thursday.
According to the preliminary investigation, a 50-year-old man was attempting to cross the highway from the south to the north when he was hit by a 2016 Chevrolet Cruz headed westbound, troopers said. The man was then hit by a second westbound car, a 2007 Toyota Corolla.
The driver of the first car told troopers she attempted to avoid hitting the man but was unable to.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers said the area of the highway where the pedestrian was hit is not a marked crosswalk and is not lit by street lights. The man was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing at the time.
Troopers are looking at alcohol consumption as a possible factor in the crash.
Oregon State Police recommend pedestrians and cyclists always wear bright colors and reflective materials so they can more easily be seen in the dark or bad weather.
Investigators have not released the name of the pedestrian, pending notification of next of kin.
