Elmira, N.Y : Driver airlifted following I-86 tractor-trailer crash on Sunday afternoon, March 19, 2017

A tractor-trailer went off Interstate 86 in Bath and struck a tree Sunday afternoon, resulting in the driver being airlifted to a hospital.

The Bath Volunteer Fire Department responded at 4:21 p.m. Sunday to the eastbound lane between exits 38 and 39 and found the driver still in the cab of the truck, according to a news release from the fire department. Fire and ambulance crews helped the driver exit, and a medical helicopter was called.

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 86 were closed for about an hour and traffic was rerouted so the Lifenet 77 helicopter could land, firefighters said.

Two of the truck's diesel fuel tanks were ruptured and dumped their contents, according to the release. The truck had been carrying insulation.

T&R Towing and Environmental Services recovered the truck and cleaned up the fuel spill.

The driver's condition was unknown late Sunday, the fire department said. Officials have not released the driver's identity.
