SEATTLE, WA : 1 killed, car ripped apart in high-speed crash with power pole on MLK Jr. Way on Monday, 24th October 2016
One person was killed overnight when a speeding car slammed into a power pole along Seattle's Martin Luther King Jr. Way with such force that it ripped the car completely in half, police said.
Officers and medics responded to the scene, on MLK Jr. Way South near Beacon Avenue South, about 11:50 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of a serious accident, said Detective Mark Jamieson of the Seattle police.
"The impact was such that it basically sheered the car in half," said Det. Jamieson.
A mangled Acura Integra was found at the scene, split in two. The driver's body was found outside the car along the roadway. He was later identified as a man in his 20s.A preliminary investigation found that the driver was heading north on MLK Jr. Way at high speed when he veered off the roadway and slammed into the utility pole, Jamieson said.
Seattle City Light worked to repair the light pole.
"We want to make sure we are priority is safety, we want motorist to be safe on the roadway," said Farrah Paul from Seattle City Light. "We want our crews to be safe when we are out there fixing it."
The northbound lanes of MLK Jr. Way between South Boeing Access Road and South Henderson Street were for 14 hours after the crash. They reopened just after 2 p.m.
