Boone, IA : 7-year-old boy died after being struck by a car in the 1700 block of Hawkeye Drive on Wednesday night, Oct 7, 2015

A 7-year-old Boone boy died Wednesday night after being struck by a car.

The crash was reported in the 1700 block of Hawkeye Drive about 9:48 p.m., around the same location where a woman was hit and killed by a vehicle three years ago.

According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, Connor Joseph Rigby, 20, of Madrid, was driving his car westbound on Hawkeye Drive when he hit Taron Coty, of Boone.

Taron's friend, Kailani Higgins, 11, said, “He was very nice. I loved him a lot.”

Rescue crews said the young boy was traveling with two other people when he was struck. He was on his way to Kum & Go.

There are no streetlights or sidewalks on the road where Coty was struck.

“The roadway was not well-lit where he was. He was wearing dark clothing,” said Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig.

Ludwig said it’s not likely the driver will face any charges.

Investigators said they don’t believe speed or alcohol were factors in the car accident.

“They’re on the roadway. You’re not expecting to see somebody on the roadway,” said Ludwig.

With two deaths, those close to Taron said they want change.

“When they walk to a lot to Walmart because they have to go pick up things, I’d be scared because that road is there,” said Higgins.

Boone City Councilmember Fenner Stevenson said the accident happened in an area that’s not developed, and it’s likely the City Council will look at the issue.

“It is certainly a concern anytime anyone is even hurt and get in an accident like that. It’s a concern to me,” said Stevenson. “Normally, streetlights and sidewalks, that type of stuff go in as we develop that area.”
