Caruthersville, MO : 1 person killed, and 9 injured in a crash involving a church van in Pemiscot County on Wednesday, February 11, 2015

One person was killed, and nine others were injured in a crash involving a church van in Pemiscot County Wednesday. The crash happened on Route U, approximately five miles west of Caruthersville, at about 7 p.m.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) reported that 32-year-old David W. Pennington, of St. Louis, was trying to pass an SUV, driven by 24-year-old Franklin Casteel, of Cooter. Pennington hit the SUV, and then collided with the nearby church van. The van caught on fire. The driver of the van, 43-year-old Bobby Coleman, of Caruthersville, was taken to Pemiscott Memorial Hospital, in Hayti, where he was pronounced dead at around 7:30 p.m. The MSHP added that seven people riding in the van were injured, including a five-year-old boy, five teenagers and one adult. The injuries ranged from moderate to serious. Some in the van were flown to Memphis hospitals, while others were taken to Pemiscot Memorial. Pennington suffered serious injuries and was flown to Regional Medical Center, in Memphis. Casteel was moderately injured and taken to Pemiscott Memorial Hospital. The van was from the Kinfolk Ridge Baptist Church, in Caruthersville, and was on its way to a banquet, at the time of the crash.
