Lorain, OH : A two-car crash on Monday, August 28, 2017
A two-car crash Aug. 28 in Elyria claimed the life of a 58-year-old Elyria woman and sent another to the hospital, said Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino.
Vicki L. Hill died at the scene, according to a news release later in the day from Elyria police.
About 5:46 a.m., police received a call about a crash at the intersection of West Avenue and Third Street, Costantino said.
According to the release, upon arriving on scene, emergency personnel discovered two heavily damaged vehicles with a 2007 Jeep Liberty completely engulfed in flames.
Officers were unable to make entry into the vehicle due to being pushed back by the intensity of the flames, the release said.
Attempts by firefighters to extinguish the flames were unsuccessful, the release said.
The 40-year-old driver of a 2003 Buick Century was located when officers heard her yelling for help, the release said. She was removed from the vehicle just before it caught on fire. She was flown by medical helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in serious condition, the release said. Her present condition is unknown at this time.
A preliminary investigation indicated Hill was stopped in her Jeep at the intersection of West Avenue and Third Street when she was rear-ended by the Buick, causing extensive damage to both vehicles, the release said.
Investigators had not determined how the fire started, the release said.
The driver of the Buick was cited for OVI and remains in hospital, according to the release.
The investigation is ongoing and police said more charges are likely, the release said. No additional information is being released at this time.
