Providence, R.I : Man charged in Wrong-way Highway crash on I-95 midnight Friday, December 26, 2014

Rhode Island State Police have arrested and charged a man accused of causing a crash while driving the wrong way on the highway.

Police said the driver, Francois Garand III, was heading south on I-95 North at about midnight Thursday, when his car struck another vehicle head-on. The suspect took off on foot and jumped into Narragansett Bay, but was apprehended a short time later.

Portions of the highway were shut down for about an hour after the accident.

Garand, 40, of Somerset, was arraigned Friday on charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and resisting arrest.
State Police Lt. Timothy Sanzi said he had a passenger in his SUV who had to be extricated from the vehicle by emergency crews.

“Luckily there were minor injuries sustained by the operator who was eventually arrested and his front-seat passenger, as well as the vehicle that they struck,” Sanzi added.

Police are now awaiting the results of a blood test taken at the hospital to reveal his blood-alcohol content.

Garand was released on $5,000 surety bail. He is due back in court on Feb. 27.
