Surry, ME : Blind pedestrian was died while he was walking along Toddy Pond Road with his guide dog when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle on Tuesday August 19th 2014

Police say a blind pedestrian has been killed in Maine's Hancock County. Police say 54-year-old James Miekka (MEE'-kah) was walking along Toddy Pond Road with his guide dog when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle on Tuesday. The motorist, 27-year-old Robert Elliott of Surry, told police that sun obscured his vision, and he rendered aid until help arrived. WNSX-TM reports that Miekka's dog is being cared for by a friend. The death remains under investigation. Miekka, a former physics teacher, created an artificial vision device that helped him practice target shooting despite being totally blind. He's also credited with devising the so-called "Hindenburg Omen," a formula aimed at projecting a stock market meltdown that has received attention in the financial press over the years.
