JACKSON, MS : Two teens died in hit-and-run accident in Jackson on Saturday, 13th August, 2016
The Jackson Police Department is investigating a deadly overnight hit and run accident.
50-year-old William Gilbert has been charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident that left two teens dead.
Family members of the teens are heartbroken they're loved ones are now gone.
Family of Promise Hampton said their 15-year-old loved one and her 13-year-old friend Bryan Jones were walking on Northside Drive, near Del Rosa Drive, around 11:30 p.m. Friday when the unthinkable happened.
“They had went to a gathering for some teens at a house and there were no drinks," said Phyllis Thomas. "They decided they were going to walk and get some drinks and the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed from my understanding.”
Jackson Police believe William Gilbert was driving a blue Jeep Cherokee that hit the teens, but instead of stopping, he kept going and later abandoned SUV.
Gilbert has since turned himself to authorities.
It still being investigated if alcohol was a factor in the accident.
“This is a very tragic situation," said JPD Commander Tyree Jones. "Of course, any driver should be aware of the roadway. If you are intoxicated you shouldn't be operating the motor vehicle under those conditions as well.”
Jones and Hampton both died from their injuries.
“Gone way too soon, way too soon,” said Thomas.
“When I heard about it, I just jumped out the bed because I heard my older sister crying and was like, what,” said Promise’s cousin Morgan Thomas.
The Jones family said Bryan was a happy, friendly kid who was always smiling. The Hampton family said Promise was same way and a joy to be around.
“A good kid all around," said Thomas. "She was real funny and loving toward her mother and sister.”
“It is saddening. I miss her," added Morgan. "I am going to miss her. I miss her."
