Shelbyville, IN : Driver taken to Methodist following single-car accident on Monday, 15th August, 2016
The Fairland Fire Department and the Shelby County Sheriff's Department responded to a single-car accident at 12:30 p.m. Monday which sent the driver to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by Shelbyville medics.
A Mazda Protege, driven by Allysa M. Ortel, of Shelbyville, was driving northwest on Michigan Road when it veered left from the right side of the right lane, spun sideways across the road, then left the left side of the road. It then slid passenger's side first through the grass, through a state highway fence and into a grove of trees.
When the sheriff's department arrived at the scene, a witness, Severiano G. Lopez III, of New Palestine, was trying to talk to Ortel.
Lopez told officers Ortel was unconscious after he came to help, but she had come to.
He said he was driving southeast toward the Mazda and was about 150 yards northwest of the scene of the crash when he looked up and saw the Mazda fish-tailing across the road, then spinning sideways.
He told police he thought she was driving "pretty fast" when he saw the car start to lose control.
He stopped at the scene and stayed with Ortel until first responders arrived.
Ortel was able to provide to police her name, but couldn't tell them anything about the crash.
When police arrived, she appeared to be trapped with her legs still under the dash of the driver's side while she was sitting partially on the center console and the passenger's side seat.
She had a cut on the right side of her forehead, but said she wasn't in pain.
She was taken to Methodist Hospital.
