Yuma, AZ : 20-year-old Marine killed, another injured in a truck accident on Highway 78 east of Yuma on Tuesday, April 21, 2015

A Marine was killed in an incident Tuesday involving a military vehicle traveling in support of the Weapons and Tactics Instructor course, according to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma.

The rollover occurred at approximately 10 a.m. Tuesday on Ogilby Road, south of Highway 78, MCAS Yuma said. Ogilby Road is located to the east of the Imperial Sand Dunes, and connects to Interstate 8 in California.

A California Highway Patrol report says a Marine Corps 7-ton Oshkosh truck was driving south on Ogilby at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday while a Federal Express GMC box truck was being driven in the northbound lane by Randall A. Villareal, 30, of Yuma.

CHP said Villareal, who told authorities he was going about 60 to 70 mph, diverted his attention from the road and drifted into the Marine vehicle's path in the southbound lane. The other driver swerved onto the shoulder to avoid a collision, then lost control while trying to return to the road and the truck overturned.

The driver, a 20-year-old Marine from Sacramento, Calif., was killed. The driver's name has not been released by CHP or MCAS Yuma.

The Marine truck's passenger, identified by CHP as 20-year-old Heraclio Juarez Jr. of Long Beach, Calif., was life-flighted to Yuma Regional Medical Center with lacerations to his head and right leg, while Villareal was not hurt.

No arrests have been made in the crash, according to the CHP report.

MCAS Yuma said the injured Marine is currently in stable condition at YRMC.

MCAS Yuma officials note that the incident is still under investigation. The name of the deceased Marine will not be released until 24 hours after next of kin notification.
