Fresno, CA : 5 injured, 1 seriously, in Kerman crash on Wednesday, December 28th 2016

Five people were injured, including a 6-year-old girl who was seriously injured, after a van collided with a pickup and overturned in a rural area of Kerman on Wednesday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol reported Thursday. (A CHP spokesman had reported Wednesday that a woman and toddler were seriously injured in the crash.)

Griselda Lopez, 25, of Kerman, was driving a 2009 Kia van east on Ashlan Avenue just before 5 p.m. when she failed to stop at the Trinity Avenue stop sign, the CHP said. Lopez drove into the path of a Toyota pickup that was heading south on Trinity. After colliding, both vehicles ended up on the southeast corner of the intersection, and the van ended up on its roof.

Lopez and three passengers – Eva Ramirez, 45, the 6-year-old girl and a 4-year-old girl, all Kerman residents – were taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. The 6-year-old suffered major head injuries and was flown to the hospital for treatment, the CHP said.

The pickup driver, Alex Kobets, 71, of Kerman, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Community Regional. Officers determined at the hospital that he was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him for DUI but released him to hospital staff for treatment, the CHP said.
