Two residents of Council Bluffs are dead and two others were injured in an accident west of Sioux City.

It happened in Jackson, Nebraska, around 3:40 a.m.

According to a media release from the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found the car down an embankment in a creek.

They say the driver, 45-year-old Christopher Cox, was able to get out of the car and climb up to the road.

Investigators said there were three passengers inside the car: 57-year-old Connie Fauzae and 9-year-old Espionza Lara, who were pronounced dead at the scene; and 10-year-old Jose Lara, who was taken to a hospital, where he is on life support.

The driver told police he swerved to avoid hitting a deer, lost control and went off the roadway.

The accident remains under investigation.

The crash was one of three deadly collisions overnight on Nebraska roads.

In Kearney County, authorities say a 62-year-old man died after his car collided with two pickups.

The accident was reported a little after 7 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. Highway 6/34, about three miles southwest of Minden.

The Kearney County Sheriff's Office says Neil Jurgens was driving west when his car was struck from behind by a pickup. The impact knocked the car into the eastbound lanes, where it was struck by another pickup.

Jurgens was pronounced dead at the scene. He'd lived in Minden. The two pickup drivers were not injured.

In Adams County, authorities say a 71-year-old Hastings man was killed in a collision on U.S. Highway 281.

The crash was reported Wednesday night about four miles north of Hastings. The Nebraska State Patrol says a northbound car crossed the median and rammed into an oncoming car driven by Robert Samuelson, who was fatally injured.
