New Carrollton, MD : Woman dies after Md. police cadet crashes into her car on the Capital Beltway near New Carrollton on Friday morning, August 1, 2014

A Temple Hills woman died Friday morning after a Maryland State Police cadet crashed into her car on the Capital Beltway, authorities said.

Karen Holt-Williams, 59, was driving an SUV on Interstate 495 just north of U.S. Route 50 in Maryland when a cadet driving an unmarked car lost control of his vehicle, police said.

About 8:30 a.m., Cadet Sebastian L. Reyes, 18, was on the inner loop of I-495 and used a crossover lane for emergency vehicles to get on the outer loop and travel in the opposite direction, police said.

Reyes “pulled into the fast lane of the outer loop and accelerated to what witnesses describe as a high-rate of speed,” according to a statement from Maryland State Police.

That’s when his car sideswiped Holt-Williams’s vehicle, sending her SUV into the jersey wall, police said. After hitting Holt-Williams, Reyes’s car spun out of control and hit a third vehicle, whose driver was uninjured, authorities said.

Reyes, a civilian employee who has worked in the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division for eight months, has been placed on leave.

State prosecutors and police are investigating the incident.
