Rochester, NY : Tractor-trailer driver killed in Corning crash on Thursday morning, July 28, 2016
A tractor-trailer driver is dead after his rig crashed down an embankment Thursday morning off of Interstate 86 in the City of Corning.
Corning police responded around 8:30 a.m. Thursday to a truck accident along I-86 near the Baker Street Extension.
An investigation determined the tractor-trailer was westbound on I-86 just west of Exit 46 when it left the right side of the roadway, became airborne and descended about 60 feet down the embankment. The trailer overturned, crushing the cab, before it came to rest, police said.
The driver was identified as Eric C. Hoffman, 43, of Highland, Indiana. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Steuben County Coroner Alan Lewis.
No hazardous materials were released, and no road closures were required as result of the accident, police said.
The truck was reportedly carrying fiberglass insulation.
Corning police were assisted at the scene by the Corning Fire Department, New York State Police, state Department of Transportation, City of Corning Department of Public Works and T&R Towing Service.
