Florence, AZ : The captain of the Navajo County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team has died in an ATV accident near Superior on Thursday, March 17, 2016

Authorities say the captain of the Navajo County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team has died in an ATV accident near Superior.

Pinal County Sheriff's officials say 65-year-old Mike Monahan was identified as the victim of Thursday's accident near the Picket Post Trailhead.

His friends called Pinal County authorities for assistance when he hadn't returned to his campsite after going out riding his ATV alone for more than five hours.

Authorities say Monahan was found dead in a wash.

Investigators say evidence at the scene indicates Monahan likely lost control of his ATV and the impact of the fall off an 8-foot ledge caused massive head trauma.
