One person was killed and two others were hurt in a crash that shut down I-75 Sunday morning, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Drivers were stuck in a several-hour shutdown on I-75 Sunday morning after a crash in the southbound lane. Officials say a young woman crashed into an unoccupied car stopped just north of Erie Road. After crashing, the driver and one passenger exited the vehicle and moved toward the barriers for safety.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says a box truck collided with the two vehicles stopped on the road around 12:20 a.m. Sunday morning. The driver of the box truck, identified as Eddie C. Dillard, age 59, of Detroit was pronounced dead at the scene. The box truck was not equipped with an airbag system and the other vehicle’s occupants were taken to the hospital, but are in stable condition, according to MCSO.
The shutdown on I-75 only affected southbound lanes beginning around Erie Road in Erie Township and extending several miles up the highway. Several viewers called into the station saying they had been at a standstill for hours. 13 Action News crews were on the scene and saw traffic beginning to move shortly before 7 a.m.
