A Clay County man died in a head-on crash with a semi truck west of Riley Thursday evening.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, Kurtis Anderson, 20, of Green was driving an SUV west on U.S. Highway 77, or the 13000 block of Madison Road, at 5:30 p.m.

Anderson swerved into the opposite lane to avoid hitting a car in front of him, which KHP Trooper Ben Gardner said could have been stopped or slowed down, and hit an oncoming semi. Anderson’s vehicle rolled and came to rest upside down.

Anderson was declared dead at the scene and taken to the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home. He was wearing a seatbelt, according to the report.

The drivers of the semi, Thomas Warborg, 53, of Worthington, Minnesota, and the vehicle Anderson swerved to avoid, Beth Schmelzle, 40, of Riley were uninjured.
