Sun City, AZ : Two vehicles collided and sends car into drainage ditch on Tuesday morning July 29th 2014
Two drivers walked away shaken up but unhurt after their vehicles collided in Sun City, leaving one hanging precariously over the edge of a box culvert Tuesday afternoon.
Both male drivers are in their late teens to early 20s.
The drivers as well as a single passenger in the one of the vehicles were wearing seat belts.
According to the drivers and their families, a 2000 Ford Mustang two-door sedan driven by a 19-year-old was traveling north on 99th Avenue around 1:30 p.m. approaching the intersection with Santa Fe Drive, when it was struck by a 2014 Nissan 370 Z sports car entering the roadway from eastbound Santa Fe. The intersection spans a box culvert that carries an 8-foot deep drainage ditch along the median of the divided 99th Avenue.
The impact sent the Nissan swerving sharply and over the side of the box culvert, where its rear axle caught the concrete curb, leaving the vehicle hanging precariously, its front end touching the dry ditch’s bottom. The Mustang, meanwhile, careered over the curb and onto the sloping concrete side of the drainage ditch, up the other side and back onto the southbound lanes of 99th Avenue, where it came to rest.
“He’s scared. He doesn’t know what happened,” said the father of the Nissan’s driver, who was on lunch break from his job as a food server at Royal Oaks Retirement Community, less than a quarter mile away. The family lives in Surprise.
“I can’t believe my car went into the canal (ditch) and right out,” said the Mustang’s driver, a Peoria resident and a food-service employee at Freedom Plaza who was dropping his brother off for work at Royal Oaks, where he also is a food server.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputies closed 99th Avenue for about an hour while the wreckage was cleared before reopening the northbound side of the road.
The southbound side was reopened about a half hour later.
A deputy said the accident was still under investigation but he expected citations to be issued.
