Norwalk, CT : 79-year-old pedestrian struck and killed on Newtown Avenue on Thursday night, April 28, 2016
Joseph Torok has been identified as the 79-year-old pedestrian who was struck and killed on Newtown Avenue late Thursday night.
Norwalk police Lt. Terry Blake said Torok, who lived on Nelson Avenue, was walking in the road in the area of 197 Newtown Ave. at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday when a car fatally struck the man.
Nelson Avenue is about a mile from where Torok was struck.
Blake said the accident remains under investigation. No arrest has been made in the case.
A neighbor, Alexander Escalante, was watching television at home when a loud noise caught his attention.
“It sounded like somebody had dropped a large box and the next thing I knew I saw flashing lights outside the window,” Escalante said. “At first I thought maybe someone had gotten a flat tire, and when I got up to look it was a madhouse of police cars and fire trucks. I saw a pair of shoes in the middle of the road right across from my house and the body in the road about 10 meters away. It looked to me that maybe he had been crossing the street. It’s very sad.”
The driver of the car stopped immediately after striking the victim and called for police.
“It looked like an Audi hatchback,” Escalante said. “The car was across the road sideways — it looked like the impact turned the car around. I believe it was a female driving the car.”
