Fort Wayne, IN : 1 dead after hit-and-run crash on Tuesday, November 15th 2016
A hit-and-run driver in a fatal multiple-vehicle crash was detained by police Tuesday after he left the scene and minutes later reported the car as stolen, police said.
The crash occurred at 1:35 p.m. at Parnell Avenue and Coliseum Boulevard. Four vehicles were involved, the Fort Wayne Police Department said.
One of the drivers who was struck in the crash apparently was in cardiac arrest when officers arrived and died at a hospital after being taken there in critical condition.
The other two drivers of the vehicles involved were also taken to a hospital for treatment.
According to police, preliminary information based on witness accounts indicated that a vehicle was traveling east on Coliseum Boulevard at high speed. The vehicle never slowed and rear-ended an SUV that was stopped at a red light at Parnell, police said.
The collision resulted in two other vehicles being hit that were also stopped at the light. Both the driver of the vehicle responsible for the crash and his passenger were seen fleeing south through retail business parking lots, police said.
Several minutes after the crash, officers got a 911 call reporting that the speeding vehicle was stolen. When officers arrived to meet with the person who reported the stolen vehicle, he matched the description of the driver seen leaving the scene of the crash and was detained. It was unclear Tuesday whether the driver was arrested.
The crash remains under investigation by city police and the Allen County prosecutor’s office.
