Yolo County, CA : 2 people thrown from Yolo Causeway in deadly crash on Monday morning, September 26, 2016

One person was killed and two people were hurt Monday morning in a series of crashes that led to two people being thrown off the Yolo Causeway in Yolo County, the California Highway Patrol.

A truck driver told KCRA 3 he was driving east across the Yolo Causeway about 2:45 a.m. with a full load of tomatoes when he came upon a sedan stalled in the slow lane.

The driver said he slammed on the brakes but could not avoid the stalled car, hitting it from behind on the unlit portion of the bridge.

When he checked the car there was nobody inside, but he eventually found a man and a woman standing on the shoulder of the road, the truck driver said.

He returned to his vehicle to get a flashlight to alert incoming traffic, according to the CHP.

While he was gone, a Toyota Prius slammed into the stalled car and caused the man and woman to be thrown from the Interstate 80 bridge down 30 feet to the Yolo Bypass below, according to investigators.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman was hoisted up and taken to a hospital in critical condition, officers said.

A third man was hospitalized with moderate injuries, while the tomato truck driver was not injured.

CHP investigators said the sedan initially became stalled in the road following a minor fender bender.

A couple lanes of eastbound I-80 were shut down, but have since reopened. Both directions of I-80 are backed up for the morning commute.
