Chapel hill , NC : 36- Year old man was killed after Truck crashed and caught on fire at the Jaycee Burn center on Saturday , December 13th 2014
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
A man was critically burned after the 10-wheeler he was driving caught fire.
Trooper Greg Koonce says it was around 6 a.m. Saturday when the truck ran off the right side of NC 11 Southbound, just inside the Pitt County line.
The truck struck a guard rail, went down an embankment, overturned, and caught fire, trapping the driver inside.
Witness Wiley Price and another man rescued the victim from the burning vehicle.
Price says he lives nearby and heard what sounded like a container dropping from a five story building.
He says he immediately jumped up and ran down to the bottom of the embankment. He wasn't sure how he was going to save the man but then someone else showed up with a fire extinguisher.
The men were able to carry the victim's badly burned body to safety.
The Grifton Fire Department arrived to the scene. The victim was transported to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill via helicopter.
Koonce says the man suffered severe burns to his lower body.
Highway Patrol is investigating whether alcohol or speed were a factor in the crash.
Troopers say the truck was a commercial vehicle, but the cab was burned beyond recognition.
