COVINGTON, OH : a fatal single car accident on May, Tuesday, 16th 2017

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the cause of a fatal single car accident in the 7200 block of Ingle Road, Covington, on Tuesday.

According to Miami County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Tom Wheeler, the name of the deceased will not be released until a positive identification is made and then released by the sheriff’s office, which he anticipated to be late Tuesday or early Wednesday morning.

As of press time, Miami County Victim Witness was still notifying family.

The incident occurred at 1:57 p.m. Tuesday when deputies responded to a report of an SUV that struck a fence and then a tree and caught on fire.

According to Chief Deputy Steve Lord, deputies responded to the scene within four minutes of the dispatch call. Deputies attempted to extinguish the fire and extract the driver from the burning vehicle.

Covington EMS personnel pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

The body was transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for identification.

Capt. Wheeler said one deputy suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation in her attempt to free the victim from the vehicle. The deputy was expected to be treated and released from the hospital Tuesday evening.

This is the first fatal traffic accident in 2017 in Miami County.
