Paynesville,MN : Members of New London family injured in vehicle crash on March, Wednesday 28th 2018

The 16-year-old driver of a minivan and an 11-year-old passenger were airlifted Wednesday morning to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis with serious injuries following a head-on crash with a semitractor-trailer at 10:08 a.m. Wednesday on state Highway 23, approximately three miles east of Paynesville.

The name and hometown of the teenage driver have not been released by the State Patrol, but the 11-year-old has been identified as Nathaniel Izak Shumaker of New London. Also injured in the crash were Benjamin Patrick Shumaker, 15, and Heather Kathleen Shumaker, 50, both of New London.

A prayer vigil was held Wednesday afternoon for the Schumaker family at the Peace Lutheran Church in New London.

A GoFundMe page page set up Wednesday evening reported that two members of the Schumaker family had underwent surgery and remain in critical condition. The page URL is: www.go.fundme.com/schumaker-family-benefit.

The State Patrol report said Ben and Heather Schumaker suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the Paynesville Hospital.

The driver of the semi, Roger Sylvester Bruemmer, 61, of Richmond, had non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the crash report, the 2007 Chrysler Town and Country minivan was traveling east on Highway 23 when it crossed the center line and struck head-on the westbound 2000 Freightliner pulling a 2011 semitrailer.

The airbag in the minivan deployed and everyone involved was wearing their seatbelts, said the crash report. Roads were reported dry at the time of the crash.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation closed the portion of Highway 23 where the accident occured for a nearly three hours, according to Twitter posts from MnDOT District 3.
