A Maine man died in a car crash on Interstate 95 Tuesday afternoon, according to state police.
Rodney Hoverson, 54, of Harpswell, Maine, died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle accident northbound on Interstate 95, according to a New Hampshire State Police press release.
The single-car crash was reported at about 3:20 p.m. and occurred near the Exit 3 off-ramp to Route 33, according to first responders.
Portsmouth Fire Chief Steve Achilles said the car was traveling northbound when, for reasons not immediately known, it "rolled over multiple times" before stopping on its roof "almost in the southbound lane." Hoverson, who was driving the 2003 Mitsubishi Montero, was ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to state police.
State police said that the vehicle was traveling north when it went off the left side of the roadway and re-entered and as Hoverson attempted to regain control the vehicle rolled several times. The vehicle came to a rest in the southbound breakdown lane. Hoverson was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
A passenger, 46-year-old Darren Carlton of Vassalboro, Maine, was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with multiple non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, police said.
State police said speed and impairment appear to be possible contributing factors in the accident, however, all aspects are being investigated.
Hoverson was previously warned for distracted driving when he crashed his sports utility vehicle on Interstate 295 in Freeport, Maine in February, according to the Bangor Daily News. Hoverson was reportedly uninjured in that crash and told police that he went to adjust the radio and lost control of the vehicle.
Portsmouth firefighters and emergency medical technicians responded to the crash with two engine trucks and ambulances, according to the fire chief.
The two left lanes northbound on Interstate 95 were closed for roughly two hours during the investigation. The left travel lane southbound was also closed.
