Milwaukee, WI : Two men died when their car struck by stolen SUV on Milwaukee's west side on Wednesday, December 30, 2015

Two men were killed Wednesday when the driver of a stolen SUV fleeing an attempted police stop crashed into the car they were in on Milwaukee's west side, police said.

The crash occurred about 9:30 a.m. at N. Sherman Blvd and W. Roosevelt Drive, according to a news release from the Milwaukee Police Department.

The victims, the 57-year-old driver and a 58-year-old passenger in a tan, four-door Chevy Malibu, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to the release.

Two Milwaukee women in the stolen Kia Sportage, ages 21 and 22, were arrested and hospitalized with serious injuries, according to police.

Officers were not pursuing the stolen vehicle at the time of the crash.

The deaths of the two men, whose identities were not released, brought the total number of people killed in traffic crashes in Milwaukee involving stolen vehicles during 2015 to 12, 10 more than all of 2014, according to Milwaukee police.

The 12 are among 64 people killed in fatal crashes in the city this year. During 2014, there were 49 traffic fatalities in the city, according to police.

The Milwaukee Police Department's pursuit policy requires officers to have probable cause that someone in a vehicle is either committing a violent felony or is a "clear and immediate threat to the safety of others" before a pursuit can be initiated. Critics have said it allows criminals to get away, while supporters say it saves lives.

Police said they will present their case against the women to the Milwaukee County district attorney's office in the coming days.
