Frostproof, FL : 2-vehicle crash kills brother and sister from Frostproof, sends 3 men to the hospital on Friday, 28th October, 2016
Tragedy struck Frostproof Middle-Senior High School early Friday morning as two siblings and high school students lost their lives.
Jorge Lara, 18, and his sister Melanie Lara, 15, of 64 Princeton Ave., were killed in a two-car accident on U.S. 27 about 6:20 a.m. Friday on their way to school.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Jorge Lara, the driver of a Jeep Liberty, had been headed east on Providence Avenue when he attempted to turn north onto U.S. 27 and was hit by a white Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in the southbound lanes.
Deputies said it appears as though Lara did not see the Silverado containing driver Jose Vazquez-Rivera, 23, of Bartow and passengers Francisco Herrera and Luis Lazos-Gomez, both of Wahneta. Vazquez-Rivera and Lazos-Gomez were taken to Winter Haven Hospital while Herrera was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center — all with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
The Sheriff’s Office said neither speed, impairment nor distraction appeared to be factors. All involved were wearing seatbelts. U.S. 27 was shut down southbound for about five hours, deputies said.
