Belleville, IL : A motorcycle rider died on May, Monday, 22nd 2017

A motorcycle rider died Monday when his Harley-Davidson collided with a farm tractor in Macoupin County.

Illinois State Police said the motorcycle rider, 47-year-old Robert Welch, of Mt. Olive, was attempting to pass a John Deere tractor operated by 57-year-old Eric Miller, of Walshville, on U.S. Route 66. As Welsh attempted the pass, Miller was in the process of making a left turn.

Welch’s motorcycle hit a trailer that was being pulled by the tractor. Welch was taken by ambulance to Staunton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Miller was not injured.

The crash caused a three-hour shutdown of the highway.

State police said Tuesday morning that the investigation of the crash was ongoing.
