Embarrass, MN : Two girls injured in ATV accident in rural St. Louis County on Sunday, May 1, 2016

Two 14-year-old girls were injured when their all-terrain vehicle overturned in rural St. Louis County on Sunday.

The girls were traveling near the intersection of St. Louis County Highway 21 and Waris Road, near Embarrass, when the crash occurred at about 5:30 p.m.

The operator of the ATV was airlifted to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release early Monday. The passenger was transported to Essentia Health-Virginia. Both had non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office reported; an update on their condition was not available Monday afternoon.

Neither girl was wearing a helmet, the sheriff’s office reported; speed and operator inexperience are considered to be factors in the crash.

Embarrass fire and first responders, Tower Ambulance and a Life Link III helicopter assisted at the scene.
