Authorities today identified a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy killed Wednesday night in a motorcycle crash on his way to work.

Phillip Leigh "Trey" Adams III was 21. He is the son of Jefferson County sheriff's Sgt. LaWanda Bonner.

The crash happened at 5:25 p.m. on Interstate 65 just north of Interstate 459, said Hoover police spokesman Capt. Gregg Rector. Adams, who was on his way to his shift at the Jefferson County Jail, was traveling northbound on his 2008 Suzuki motorcycle when he made contact with a tractor-trailer that was also northbound.

The 21-year-old deputy was pronounced dead on the scene by Hoover Fire paramedics. The driver of the tractor trailer, a 22-year-old manfrom Spring Hill, Florida, was uninjured. Police Traffic investigators continue their efforts to reconstruct the accident scene and determine its cause. "The Hoover Police Department sends its deepest sympathies to Deputy Adams' family and friends, and to his family at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department,'' police said in a press release.

Adams first joined the sheriff's office as a civilian employee, and recently became a deputy. "They are a wonderful family who obviously are dedicated to serving this community,'' said Sheriff Mike Hale."They are also our family."

"Our hearts are broken and our prayers are with them and with each other,'' said Chief Deputy Randy Christian. "I know this community will pray for comfort also as we come to grips with losing one so young and with so much promise."
