Seguin, TX : Crews work spate of wrecks on May, Tuesday 9th 2017
Authorities say rainy weather was partly to blame for a few wrecks Tuesday afternoon.
An 18-wheeler that slid off the roadway and into a culvert leaked diesel into a nearby creek about 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of South State Highway 123 and Meadow Lake.
Seguin Police Traffic Officer Willie Ybarra said the tractor-trailer was heading north when the driver reportedly noticed the light change and tried to stop.
“As he applied the breaks, the trailer began to fishtail, causing him to lose control of his tractor and veered off into the culvert,” he said.
The driver, who was alone in the big rig, was not injured, Ybarra said.
Mott’s Towing was called in to help pull the tractor and trailer out of the ditch, Ybarra said.
The truck and trailer were damaged and leaking diesel, he said.
“He did lose some diesel fuel into culvert,” he said.
Seguin Fire Marshal said a crew from the Texas Department of Transportation and SWS Environmental were called to assess the spill and clean it up.
“We have an estimated 25 gallons of diesel that has leaked into the creek bed,” he said. “They are currently mitigating it at this time, removing the water with the diesel in it. Then we have set measures in place it keep it from going any further downstream.”
While crews were working the wreck, a second happened as another 18-wheeler lost control near the initial crash.
“It jackknifed in the intersection,” Ybarra said. “It didn’t cause much damage to the tractor and the trailer. It was able to drive off on its own.”
Another wreck about an hour later slowed west-bound traffic slowed on Interstate 10 near the 601 entrance ramp.
A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper said a pickup truck trying to merge onto the highway hydroplaned and struck a passenger car, pushing the smaller vehicle into the median.
