A driver suffered major head trauma, a broken pelvis and two broken legs when his car crashed head-on with a big rig on Thursday morning, officials said.

California Highway Patrol Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said 18-year-old Anthony Favela of Whittier was in critical condition at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.

The crash took place on Valley Boulevard, west of 8th Avenue at 6:12 a.m.

Favela was behind the wheel of a 2001 Honda Accord heading west on Valley Boulevard. He wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was traveling fast, according to Jimenez.

Jimenez said the Honda crossed from the westbound lanes to the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2011 Peterbilt big rig. The truck driver told the CHP he was traveling about 25 mph.

The big rig driver, 55-year-old Timoteo Romero Rivera of Long Beach, wasn’t injured.
