LAKE HAVASU CITY, AZ : Two Fort Mohave women killed in crash on Saturday, 22nd October 2016
Lake Havasu City, Arizona
Two Fort Mohave women were killed Saturday in a two-vehicle accident on Arizona Highway 95 near Lake Havasu City.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said that Marlene Shand, 80, and Rebekah Morden, 53, died when the SUV in which they were riding burst into flames following the head-on crash Saturday afternoon. The driver of the other vehicle, Anthony Ruiz, 23, of Victorville, Calif., also died in the crash.
According to DPS reports, Shand was northbound and Ruiz southbound in a two-lane section of the highway near Mile Marker 196.3, about halfway between Lake Havasu City and Topock. Ruiz’s Ford crossed into the northbound lane. Shand reportedly tried to avoid the collision by veering onto the shoulder, but Ruiz’s vehicle struck it head-on.
Witnesses told investigators that Ruiz apparently reached into the back seat of his Ford immediately before the crash.
Witnesses said that several motorists stopped to try to rescue Shand and Morden, using a fire extinguisher in an attempt to control the flames from Shand’s burning Nissan SUV. The SUV burst into flames before emergency crews could reach them.
Quentin Mehr, public information officer for the DPS, said the accident remains under investigation.
